Let's talk about the letter "D"

Skyscrapers.  Buildings.  Houses.  Apartment Complexes.  We see these things, hopefully, at least once a day.  Now as many of you know, these buildings just don't "magically" appear.  They are the result of many weeks (sometimes even months) of hard work.

I find it interesting that our lifes can be looked at in the same way.  We literally spend our whole life "building" ourselves.  Whether it be with appearances, education, relationships...we take things from the past and only build from them.  However, what I have found in my own life personally, is that no matter how long I have "built" myself up--it only takes a simple second to destroy it.  What do I mean by this?

One could be having a great day, an extraordinary day; then something happens, perhaps it is a bad comment that is said to you, perhaps a poor grade you got back, a degrading evaluation and instantly you feel bad.  Much like the example of the building, we spend so much time "building" our lifes, but all it takes is a fraction of a second to destroy them!

Degrade, destroy, demolish....  the list of "D" words could go on for awhile here.  Someone once told me it is always easier to destroy something versus building something up.  And in all honesty, I think they may have been right.  I could start any day off with a great attitude and it only takes one small bad thing to instantly turn my good day into a bad day.

Could this be because we like to dwell on the negative?  I suppose that is part of the problem; but another part could be that we really do take a lot into what people percieve us as.  I know I do!  Whether we realize it or not, other peoples thoughts and feelings about us, really do shape our personalities a lot.  So even though I describe myself as original--perhaps I am a mere result of what others percieve me as and how I have reacted to these notions.

A Dedication

Throughout my life, many things have come and gone.  Yet, even though so much is passing me by, I have managed to grab and hold onto the things that mean the most to me.  You can use whatever analogy you would like to depict the scenario, but I often fear that sometimes life moves by me too fast, and I never have enough time to take in all that I would like too.

This is why crossroads of any kind, are somewhat hard for me.  We always feel as if we need to keep moving in life, so when we are forced to stop and take a "look around" it can sometimes be hard, at least for me.  It is in times like this that I realize how important good friendships and family connections are.  I would love to tell you that I am the person I am today, because I was so strong and made it here all by myself; but, that would be a down right lie.

So I would like to dedicate this post to all my friends out there.  They always say that certain people come into our lives for a reason, and I am so grateful that through Spaces I have been able to meet so many wonderful people!

I will forever be reminded of the fact that my friends are literally my lighthouses in my stormy seas of life.  Buddha once said that: "If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change."  Sometimes the most simple things in life, we cannot even comprehend the true value they have.  This is why, to me, it is crucial to say "thank you" whenever possible.

It sometimes astonishes me the value of these two words.  And how shocked some people can be when I tell them these words!  So I am taking this chance, this moment, to tell you these simple words: "Thank You"...

When I Grow Up

When we were young, we all probably fantasized at one point or another, about what we wanted to be when we grew up.  A lot of us wanted to be a 'space ranger', cowboy or possibly a movie star.  Were a lot of these "dreams" realistic?  Well, I could argue both yes and no.

These dreams were somewhat the backbone of our lives as we grew up.  We aspired for things that could possibly bring out a better side in us.  However, a lot of these dreams could very rarely happen.  But, to me, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't have dreamed about them when we were kids.

When I was little, believe or not, I wanted to be a Children's Book Author and Illustrator.  I was the little girl who would draw out all the pictures of the characters in her stories.  And then spent hours at the "Apple Computer" typing up my stories.  I was a mini-novelest of sorts.  It was a time in my life when the true romantic came out in me.  Damsels in distress, prince and princesses, dragons...  I know, a little pathetic...

Have you ever imagined what it would be like if we ran into a kid version of ourselves?  Much like the movie 'The Kid', what would we do if presented with a situation like that.  Would we be happy to see what we had become, now that we were 'grown up'?  I would hope to think that if I were presented with this moment, that my child version would like what I had done with my life.  Even if I wasn't the 'author' I dreamed I would become.

Life isn't about sticking to a straight laid out plan.  It is about making decisions that will ultimately make us happy in life.  Compromises undoubtedly had to be made somewhere down the line, and those probably have only been followed by many more compromises.  But the key is whether we are happy with the decisions we have made since we were that little version of ourselves.  And if we aren't, there definitely still is time to do something about it.

Dressing to the Nines

Striped Polo T-shirts.  Button-up plaid shirts.  Khaki or business pants.

This is the current fashion world that I live in.  Being in the engineering field means that I am constantly surrounded by men.  They probably out number me 5 to 1 in any given class.  What does this mean?  I am constantly around people who:
A) Always think that they are right in any given situation
B) Have sloppy handwriting skills and
C) Have very little taste when it comes to anything having to deal with fashion, decorating and less we forget matching things together

They could tell you the partial derivative of 15x-6y on any day of the week, but probably would have no idea that orange is indeed a complementary color to blue.  A typical male engineer's idea of "dressing up" would simply be strapping on a tie on top of that plaid button up shirt.

So then I pose the question of what is defined as "dressing up"?  To me, it would be a business suit of sorts, I have never been one to take fondly to skirts.  I would prefer pants anyday.  Why you might ask...because skirts usually are accompanied by tall shoes.  Let me give you a simple equation there: Me + Tall Shoes = Lots of Tripping.  And would I wear a tie with my suit?  If I could pull it off, yes!  Call it my "Power Tie", if you will.

We have all been presented with situations in life where we feel the need to 'dress to impress'.  But who is kidding who here?  How are we suppose to impress someone if we aren't even comfortable let alone like what we are wearing in the first place?  And if you are anything like me, when you are preparing for these 'high stress' interviews where you must look your best, you literally try on "a thousand" outfits trying to decide which one looks the best on you but at the same time looks conservative too.

My conclusion?  When you are in these 'high tense' situations, try to think of these simple three words when picking out an outfit: comfortable and "snappy casual"

"Ah...Change is Good"

Unfortunately, I have only had the chance of not being blonde for one month of my life.  No, I haven't dyed my hair "freaky" colors, I was born with black hair.  But before you knew it, the black was out and the blonde was in.

Now you would think with a history like that I would slowly work my way back to being a "dark-headed" child, but no.  When I hit the "teenage years" I decided to highlight my hair even blonder.  Nothing too flashy, just enough to be a "real" blonde.  I suppose it was just the "teenage hormones" kicking in or something...

Later, I decided that "strawberry blonde" was the way to go.  Let's just say that turned into a disaster.  Instead of getting small highlights, I got a head full of maroon hair and what my mom described as a "slut" look.  Needless to say, within the next few hours much bleach and shampoo were used.

Apparently I didn't learn from this experience at all.  Just Friday I went to get my hair cut before the move.  Now the last time I had long hair was almost a decade ago, so the cut was no problem.  But I decided to put some auburns and caramels in my hair.  Now of course I was expecting a bad turnout considering what had happened to me last time.  But it actually turned out pretty good.  (I know, shocking isn't it!)

The lesson learned here?  Firstly, don't always fully trust your barber/hair dresser.  They can mess up...badly too!  Secondly, most people are never content with what they have.  Although change is inevitable, a lot of it is stuff that we allow to change.

But...the move went well!  I am glad that it is done.  I will post some pictures as soon as I can!

Quick question though...if you could have a lifetime supply of anything what would it be???

Gutter Ball

For me, sports have always been something I enjoy.  Now I am not saying that I would be the captain or the best on the team by any stretch of the imagination, but I just enjoy playing the game.  Mud football, volleyball, basketball...whatever, it is all the same to me.  But if you would really like to see something hilarious, all you have to do is challenge me to a game of bowling and you are sure to laugh your head off.

Have you ever heard of the term "Granny Role" or "Granny Putt"?  Yeah, I was probably the person that coined the terms.  I am, without a doubt, the worst bowler on the planet.  I do better rolling the ball with both hands, than trying to do it all fancy with just the one hand.  My bowling nickname?..."Gutter".  I wish it was better than that, but sorry, that is it.

I joined up with one of my good friends yesterday, and she decided that we should go bowling.  The only thought going through my head was "someone shoot me now".  I could just see the humiliation already.  Lines like: "You can do it."  "Do you want me to bowl one for you?"  and "Stop letting me win." were definately going to be said within the next few hours.  I almost felt as if I were a cow on the way to the slaughter house.  I envitably knew what was coming, but had no way to stop it.

So we bowled a game.  Of course my friend beat me by half.  "Oh come, that was only a practice game.  You need to play one more."  Must I relive this torture once again?  But she wouldn't take no for an answer, so we bowled one more game.

And either Lady Luck hates me, or just wasn't "with me" on this game.  I did worse than I did the first game.  More gutter balls and more 1-2 pin hits.  So as the game came to an end my friend, once again,  slaughtered me points wise.

At long last the humiliation came to an end.  But if there is one thing I learned about this game, if you are going to suck badly, than suck badly very loudly, so everyone else can gawk at you.  (And yes, everytime I had a gutter ball, I dropped to my knees, trying to convince the ball to go back and hit the pins!)

Some blood and relaxation

Greetings once again my fellow spacers.

I have once again come to another conclusion about myself.  I am getting too old...too fast!  Just today I went back to the doctor (I know...soon the doctor will become my best friend!) because "luckily" for me I have chronic headaches.  I personally think that college did it too me, but I can't be totally sure.  So after being told to fast for 12 hours I proceeded to the Doc's office.  But first let me tell you...fasting for twelve whole hours is nothing that I would like to enjoy every day of my life!  I like food, and when I can't eat any of it, well, let's just say I am not my happy "perky" self.

So they took 4 tubes of blood and said that they would call me with the results.  Okay, I haven't even hit my mid-20's yet and I have already had a CT Scan (very interesting to have) and have to see a chiropractor about every week.  Hence the term.."genetic disaster" from the previous post.

But remember when I told you that my family enjoyed family vacations?  Well, we are at it again.  On Thursday, we will be making our way to Seattle, WA.  While up there, we hope to visit Vancouver (which would be my first time out of the USA).  It looks to be a way fun trip.  So I will remember to bring my digi cam with me so I can upload pics faster.  But leave me some comments and I should be back next week!  Until then...party on and if you like Harry Potter...the 6th book is amazing!!!  And just in case you were wondering...yes, I was at the store at midnight on Friday to get the book.

Bugs + Bees = Allegra for me

I have personally decided that I need to wear a net when I go outdoors.  Not just one of those little facial nets, but a full body suit!

It all started on Sunday.

I was playing with my 2 1/2 year nephew.  As we were playing with his Elmo toys, I felt this sharp pain in my left calf.  I got up and realized that there was a WASP underneath my leg.  I hurried and killed it, and at the same time, tried to look happy as if not to scare my nephew.  After alerting my sister I needed some ice, the pain only worsened.  Now it has been a LONG time for me since I last was stung by a wasp, so the pain came kind of unexpectedly.  But after I placed the ice on it, I thought that all my worries were over.  But I was wrong!!!

The next day, Monday, I went to town with my brother, his girlfriend and her sister.  As I was waiting outside the car for my brother I got bitten 5 times by mosqitoes!  What made this even more "classic" is the fact that I didn't realize that I had been bit.  So on the way home, I scratched them every now and then.  I mean, sometimes you itch, right?  But when I got home, I saw the result of that evening.  Each bug bite was probably as big as a quarter.  Not to mention the wasp bite I had gotten the other day, was pretty big too!  I decided that I should take something for allergies.  And knowing that I had no Benadryl, Allegra and Claritin were the next best things.  So after some sleep and some serious drugs, I just have 5 little red dots on my skin.

But you can bet that next time I go outside I will be doused in Bug Repellent or be carrying a case of Allegra with me!

The Musings of a Windshield

I am so excited that springtime is in the air, but the one thing that has me down is my windshield and the amount of bugs that are in the air right now.  My windshield is without a doubt one of the biggest bug cemetaries ever.  You wouldn't even know I owned washer fluid!!!

I suppose the main cause of this problem lies in the vehicle I drive.  Now most of you, probably all of you, drive a car.  One that is 'aeronomically' designed to make you go faster and smoother on the road.  Well mine is not, at least I have decided this.  On the left, is a picture of what my car looks like (yep, a yellow jeep).  And it has one motive in life, to get dirty and to go rock crawling.  Don't get me wrong though, I love my car.  It was perfect for me.  A 2 door, four-wheel drive (considering all the snow we get here) vehicle; but it was never meant to always have a clean windshield!  (And taking of the top of your car is kind of a fun feature too!

The virtue of all achievement is victory over oneself. Those who know this can never know defeat.
