Scientific Advancement

In light of the 'hottest month of the year' here in Utah, I thought I might discuss a few 'hot topics' that have been floating around on my mind this month...  As many of you know by taking a quick glance at my "occupation", I am a student--but also (I hope) a scientist in the making.  I love the idea of scientific advancement for the greater good.  The ability to save many with a research idea drives me into a deep passion for the subject.

For any of you who have not been following the science front, stem cell research has been a topic of great hope as well as controversy these past few years.  Stem cells, with the ability to differentiate into other cells, provide potential hope to restore broken tissue and to repair organs through out the body.  Other applications of their use also include cancer and spinal injuries.

The problem however lies in their origin.  While it is possible to get stem cells from adults and other sources, research has shown that embryonic stem cells show the most potential.  Cells which are extracted from the early stage of the human embryo.  And now the plot thickens.

Though the hope remains to find many potential uses of these cells, should scientists be allowed to conduct this sort of research?  Is it ethical?  Is it logical?  Or is such research considered 'sacrifice for the greater good'?  Perhaps another good question to pose on this issue is, when is something considered to be "alive"?  (Would you consider a embryo to be alive?)

I would love to know what you think concerning this issue.

Quick Update (7/19/2006):
I am still among the living and hope to be back soon.  But for now, on regards to this topic, President George W. Bush just vetoed a bill (his first veto mind you) concerning stem cell research.  You can read more here:  http://msnbc.msn.com/id/13934199/?GT1=8307

Don't Stop Believin'

Sherlock himself could not deny the fact that I have been "Missing in Action" the past month or so.  And though I wish I had some miraculous story to explain my absence, like being marooned on an uncharted island or treking through the wilderness, I am sorry, but such isn't the case.  (Though how cool would those scenarios be?)

If there is one thing I have been able to do plenty of the past month, it is driving to and from work.  And it seems the only thing that can get me sanely through rush hour day after day are the tunes that I am jammin' to.  (I merely say jammin' as I can't seem to listen to music without tapping my foot, humming or even singing along with it.)

Interestingly enough, however, there will always be the few songs I can listen to for hours.  Merely for the fact that not only do I enjoy the beat and melody, but also the lyrics.  It could possibly be said that such songs would be listed somewhere on the 'soundtrack' of my life.  What songs would those be, you might ask?

For now I will share with you but two of them but then ask you the same question.  What are some of the songs that would be included on your 'personal soundtrack' and why, out of the many songs in this world, would you pick them?  As for me, the two I will mention for now are: Don't Stop Believin' by Journey and On My Way by Phil Collins.  My reasoning behind them is a combination of my interest in the lyrics/melody but also for the fact that often we are what we see, hear and expose ourselves too.  And much like the song title of one of them states, I am doing my best to never 'stop believin'....

Those Darn Heels

Now I have never been great at greek mythology, but if there is one story I remember it is Achilles.  A great hero by any stretch of the imagination, but with a weakness none the less.  All it took was an arrow in the heel, and he was out for the count.

Isn't it ironic that we all are guilty of having such "weaknesses" in our life.  Now by weaknesses, I am not talking about our imperfections, rather the things that make us weak in the knees.  Things that, when offered or subjected to, put us out for the count.  (One might call such a feeling speechlessness or bliss).  Funny how they say chocolate does this to most women... :o)

Now of course I could easily say chocolate and good conversation are some of my weaknesses, but another big weakness I have is that of "jazz style" singing.  More specifically, artists such as: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Michael Buble, Louis Armstrong, Joey Gian, Josh Groban...  The list could go on I assure you, but I merely state this for the fact that our "weaknesses" range far and wide!  There will always be those things that make us ecstatic and "weak".  Things that may just very well bring that feeling of pure bliss and cause us to forget our worries.

And though these surely could be considered weaknesses within our character, I feel that it is necessary to have them.  No one is a tough boulder.  We all need something that will calm us down, sooth our fears and cause us to lose ourselves for brief moments.  Without that feeling, tension, stress and chaos surely would be the dominant things in our life.

So of course, my question for you would be "What is your weakness?"  And how often do you get to "indulge" in it?

A Heated Debate

"Your beliefs and opinions have no effect on the people around you or where you live.  They are simply what you think and feel."  When told this recently, the first thing that I could do was object to the statement.  How could it be possible to live in a world free of opinion, bias and feelings is my first question.  When, to me at least, it is obvious that the world we live in today is full of such things.

We go through life picking up new philosophies as to what we think is right, or how we think things should work in general.  The topics of these philosophies are of a deep broad range that could easily span from abortion to the raising of a family.  The point is, most of us will have varying opinions when any of these things are concerned.  Occasionally we will meet someone that shares our views, but that doesn't mean they share our views on everything.

Many of us, myself included, go through life seeking to find out what is right (which I see no problem in whatsoever); but what happens when we find someone that doesn't see "eye to eye" with us?  As my friend mentioned in the statement above, in her eyes, nothing would happen if such a situation presented itself--yet I think the just the opposite would occur.

As discussed in the previous post, we are often looked at by what we wear and then what we say.  It is then the words that we say that have effects on certain people.  I have a hard time accepting the fact that if someone boldly stated that he/she was "pro-abortion" that they wouldn't be treated any different; instead they may be looked at differently or viewed as person of which they really are not.

Interestingly enough, many ideas are generated from a basis of what we believe to be right.  If you were to look back on the past, it is easy to see that people were persecuted for what their beliefs were.  And when I see such things happening, I have an extremely difficult time saying that our beliefs/opinions do not effect others or the world we live in.  Especially since many monumentus occasions in history were brought about by people with differing opinions than the "majority of the crowd".

So, now my question for you is...

Do our opinions, beliefs or bias's effect other people or the environment?

A Definition Please

Moving back home for the summer has definately been a change from the dorms at the U.  I have learned many "un-known truths", for the month or so that I have been home.  Firstly, that staying up past 10:00 PM is late.  But primarily, sleeping in past 8:00 AM, is just pure laziness.

Now I don't have a day job, I work from 4 to 8 in the evening.  But I have two questions for my fellow bloggers out there...firstly, can someone define the term "staying up late" for me, because apparently at my house, it is when there are 4 digits on the clock instead of 3

And my other question is, what is "sleeping in" anyways?  Seeing as I don't have a 7 AM (or earlier) job that I have to be too, and I definately don't have classes right now, why is it that I must awake that early in the morning?  I like sleep, is that such a crime?!

Make it blue...no make it pink!

Just yesterday, I thought that it was time to sit down and enjoy a show.  Since Ebay is a favorite of mine, I figured that I should watch the show that I just got from there, Sleeping Beauty.  Now I know that I am going to sound weird, but I love Disney movies.  Call me a sucker.  But the one thing that I hate about Disney...are Disney sequals!  They always screw them up! (With exceptions for Lion King 1 1/2 and Toy Story 2)  They always get new voices for the characters and the animation usually gets lame.

But watching this "classic" got me thinking...which Disney movie is my favorite?  Could I ever just pinpoint it to just one movie.  And after much debate, I decided that a two way tie would just have to do.  So the two I chose are The Sword in the Stone and Sleeping Beauty.  But I do love all the others too!  Don't get me wrong.

So, now I have a question to ask you, even if you aren't a Disney person, there has to be at least one of the films that you semi-enjoyed!  So...

Which DISNEY Movie is your favorite???

--And yes, you can pick one that was made with Pixar.  To me, they are pretty much the same.

Do what you do so well, that people bring others to watch you do it.

Two Tough Questions

TWO TOUGH QUESTIONS

Question 1: If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids already, three who were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she had syphilis, would you recommend that she have an abortion?

Read the next question before looking at the answer for this one.

Question 2:

It is time to elect a new world leader, and only your vote counts. Here are the facts about the three leading candidates.

Candidate A -

Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with astrologists. He's had two Mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day.

Candidate B -

He was kicked out t of office twice, sleeps until Noon, used opium in college and drinks a quart of whiskey every evening.

Candidate C -

He is a decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian, doesn't smoke, drinks an occasional beer and never cheated on his wife.

Which of these candidates would be your Choice?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Candidate A: is Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Candidate B: is Winston Churchill.

And, by the way, the answer to the abortion question:

Pretty interesting isn't it? Makes a person think before judging someone.

Never be afraid to try something new.

Are we still living in a world of segregation?

In delight of Martin Luther King day, I thought that I would relate to that topic.  As I was reflecting on the past, I couldn't help to think that we are still living in a very segregated world today.  Although most people don't realize it, I still think that my statement holds true.

In America, we tend to form, what I call, "clicks" or "groups".  And who consists of these groups?  People of the same nationality, skin color and "type" as you.  Whatever happened to seeing people for their true potential?  When I was little, I was taught that everybody had the ability to do amazing things in their life.  Is that still not true today?

If we would just put our prejudices behind us, I think that we would greatly progress as a country.  By accepting the fact that each and every one of us is unique AND can make a difference, would greatly shape our future.  I am just waiting for the day when we have a black president or even a woman president...  That would just be amazing to see what they could do!

The Tin Man am I

I myself need to answer my own blog.  I would be the Tin Man.  Because sometimes I have a heart and other times I do not.  It really just depends on the occasion of the event.  I don't know about the whole oil issue though, that really doesn't sound like me.  But if I had to pick, I would the Tin Man!
